England, 2026/27.
The usual upper capital limit is £23,250 and the lower limit is £14,250. Between the limits, tariff income is included in the financial assessment. Below the lower limit, assessable income may still contribute to charges. Councils can use more generous capital limits for non-residential care, so confirm local policy.
Wales.
The capital limit is £50,000 for residential care and £24,000 for non-residential care. The maximum £100 weekly non-residential charge applies to council-arranged care under the Welsh charging framework; it is not a cap on a private provider's bill. Property treatment depends on the setting.
Assessable capital is the relevant figure.
Do not automatically add the full value of a jointly owned home or treat every asset as cash available to pay a bill. Ask the council which assets it counts, which disregards apply and how any property interest has been valued.
A threshold is only part of the decision.
The calculator's public explanation describes estimates of funding routes and personal contributions. It does not guarantee council funding. Eligibility, the agreed care budget, income, property treatment and the council's individual assessment still matter.
Make the estimate easier to check.
Record the country and setting beside the capital figure. List any disputed or uncertain assets separately. Save the provider quote and the council's written assessment, then compare the assumptions in your estimate with the actual decision.
